Ma i cristiani vengono sconfitti e Angelica, approfittando dello scompiglio che regna nell’accampamento dei franchi, fugge. Sulle sue orme si lanciano i paladini innamorati: ha così inizio l’intreccio vorticoso e fantastico di duelli magie e battaglie. La trama è intricata e non obbedisce a un unità d’azione prefissata. È possibile tuttavia individuare tre linee principali, attorno alle quali si intrecciano i mille fili del poema. La prima è la guerra tra cristiani e saraceni, nel momento in cui questi ultimi, dopo avere sbaragliato l’esercito di Carlo, stringono d’assedio Parigi. La seconda è la storia di amore di Orlando, il più valoroso dei cavalieri di Carlo, per Angelica, la figlia del re del Catai, la quale continua per tutto il poema a essere preda, inseguita e mai raggiunta, di cristiani e saraceni. Orlando addirittura impazzisce d’amore quando apprende che lei ama Medoro, un umile soldato che ha raccolto ferito sul campo di battaglia, ha curato e poi sposato. Orlando ritroverà la ragione solo grazie ad Astolfo, che, a cavallo dell’ ippogrifo, un magico cavallo alato, andrà sulla luna a recuperarla. La terza delle vicende principali è il contrastato amore tra Bradamante, sorella di Rinaldo e valorosa guerriera cristiana, e Ruggero; cavaliere saraceno che ignora di essere nato da genitori cristiani.
